Chartres

Several kilometres before arriving at Chartres, you are already able to catch a glimpse of the high towers of the cathedral that dominates over the plains of the Beauce region.

One of the most beautiful Cathedrals in France

The Cathedral of Chartres, classed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, is without the slightest doubt one of the most magnificent in France! A true display of 12th and 13th century art, this is the most well-preserved of Gothic cathedrals. The cathedral was built between 1134 and 1260.

In addition to its beautiful facade, marked by two stoic towers (one is accessible, offering fabulous views over the old city and the surrounding region), the cathedral is famous for its stained glass. Composed of 172 panes, this ensemble covers 2,600 m². The most ancient date back to the 12th century and are known for their magnificent blue shades.

An Old City full of Charm

The district that is spread out in the shadows of the cathedral is composed of a maze of small narrow streets lined by half-timbered and gabled houses. Their savory names take us back to the nostalgic era of days gone by. The old city lies between the cathedral and the banks of the Eure.

Museums and Tourist Sites

Chartres invites you to discover its abundance of museums, such as the Beaux-Arts and the Stained Glass Centre (Centre du Vitrail). The latter is unique of its kind. Nevertheless, one of the most amazing curiosities of the city is without a doubt the Maison Picassiette. Decorated by Raymond Isidore in a mosaic composed of glass shattered by its owner, this house is a fabulous example of naïve art.
